EMDR Therapy Online in New York

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured approach that has been studied for PTSD and is used for many kinds of distressing memories. It uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping, while you briefly hold a memory in mind, so the brain can process it and its charge can lessen.

I’m certified in EMDR therapy and offer it online to adults in New York State, as part of an integrative practice that also includes Somatic Experiencing and clinical hypnosis.

What EMDR can help with

EMDR is best known for trauma, but it’s used for any memory that still drives how you feel or react today.

  • PTSD and single traumatic events
  • Childhood experiences that still shape your reactions
  • Sexual abuse
  • Grief and loss
  • Anxiety and fears tied to specific memories
  • Negative beliefs about yourself, such as ‘I’m not safe’ or ‘It was my fault’

How EMDR sessions work

EMDR follows set phases. First we take a history and choose targets together. Then we spend time on preparation: building ways to calm and steady yourself, so you have something to return to if a session gets intense. Only then do we start processing.

During processing, you focus briefly on a memory and what you notice while following bilateral stimulation. We pause often to check in. You don’t need to describe every detail out loud. Each session closes with steps to settle before you go back to your day.

How I combine EMDR with other approaches

Some people do well with standard EMDR. Others, especially people with complex trauma or dissociation, need more time on stability first. I often use Somatic Experiencing to help the body settle and clinical hypnosis to build inner resources, so EMDR processing stays manageable.

My aim is change you can feel, emotionally and physically, rather than only a better understanding of the past.

EMDR sessions online

EMDR adapts well to video. Bilateral stimulation can come from following a target on screen or from self-tapping, which I’ll teach you. Sessions are for adults located in New York State, where I’m licensed. To start, request an appointment or call (917) 570-0053.

Questions about EMDR therapy

How many EMDR sessions does it take?

It varies. A single, recent event may need fewer sessions than years of childhood trauma. Preparation alone can take several sessions for some people, and that time is well spent. We’ll review progress together as we go, and I won’t predict a number before I know your history.

Does EMDR work online?

Yes, EMDR can be done by video. Bilateral stimulation can come from following a target on screen or from tapping, and the phases of EMDR stay the same. I watch your reactions closely and we check in often. You’ll need a private space without interruptions for each session.

Is EMDR the same as hypnosis?

No. In EMDR you stay alert and aware, and you’re in control the whole time. You hold a memory briefly in mind while noticing what comes up, and you can stop at any point. Hypnosis is a different method, which I also offer, and the two can work well together in integrative therapy.

What does an EMDR session feel like?

Processing can bring up images, feelings or body sensations, and these often shift as a set continues. Some sessions feel intense, others fairly quiet. We prepare ways to settle before processing starts, and every session ends with time to get steady again. It’s common to feel tired afterward, and some people notice new thoughts or dreams between sessions.
