Trauma Therapy Online in New York

Trauma can stay in the body long after the event is over. You may handle work and relationships well enough and still feel on guard, numb, or pulled back into old memories without warning. I offer trauma therapy online for adults in New York State, using Somatic Experiencing, EMDR and clinical hypnosis as tools inside one integrative approach.

I’m Scott Whipple, LCSW, SEP. I have worked as a clinician for over 20 years, and trauma resolution is a central part of my practice.

What I help with

People come to me after single events, such as an accident, an assault or a sudden loss, and after years of harm that started in childhood. Some have a PTSD diagnosis. Many don’t, and know that something from the past is still running their present.

I also work with first responders, whose jobs put them in front of danger and other people’s worst days again and again. That kind of stress builds up, and it often shows up as irritability, poor sleep, numbness or trouble switching off at home.

  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Childhood and adult sexual abuse
  • Dissociation, including feeling detached, spaced out or unreal
  • Stress and trauma from first responder work
  • Anxiety, depression and grief that sit on top of older trauma

How I work with trauma

Talking about what happened has a place, but insight alone often doesn’t change how the body reacts. My work is experiential. In session we pay attention to what is happening right now, in your emotions, your body and below conscious thought, and work with it in small, manageable steps.

I choose tools to fit the person. Somatic Experiencing helps the nervous system settle and complete stress responses that got stuck. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain process memories that still feel current. Clinical hypnosis can build calm and inner resources, and can offer a gentler route to difficult material.

We go at a pace you can manage. You don’t have to tell the whole story to start, and you stay in charge of what we look at.

Sessions online

All sessions are by secure video, for adults located in New York State, where I’m licensed. Body-based trauma work translates well to video: we track sensation, breath and posture together on screen, and you practice new responses in the place where you live your daily life.

The first session is about getting to know each other: some history, what brings you now, and the goals we set together. To start, request an appointment or call (917) 570-0053.

Questions about trauma therapy

What type of therapy is best for trauma?

There isn’t one method that suits everyone. EMDR and several trauma-focused talk therapies have research support for PTSD, and body-based approaches such as Somatic Experiencing are widely used for trauma symptoms. I combine SE, EMDR and clinical hypnosis, and we choose based on your history, what you want to change and what feels workable in session.

Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?

No. Somatic Experiencing and EMDR can work without a detailed retelling of what happened. We often start with what you notice in your body now, and build stability before approaching hard memories. You decide what to share and when. Going slowly is often what makes steady progress possible.

Can trauma therapy work online?

Yes, for many people. Video sessions let us track your breathing, posture and reactions in real time, and both EMDR and Somatic Experiencing adapt to video. If video turns out not to suit you, we’ll talk about it openly and I can help you think through other options.

Do you take insurance for trauma therapy?

Ask about your plan when you get in touch, and I can tell you how it would work. Fees and insurance details are on the Rates page, and I’m glad to answer questions if you call (917) 570-0053 before booking.
