LGBTQ+ Therapy Online in New York

I offer affirming therapy online for LGBTQ+ adults in New York State. I work with people of all gender expressions and sexual orientations, and over more than 20 years as a clinician I have worked extensively in LGBTQ communities and with people living with HIV.

You shouldn’t have to explain or defend who you are before therapy can start. We can focus on what brings you in, connected to identity or not.

Who I work with

My practice includes:

  • Gay and bisexual men, and men who have sex with men (MSM)
  • Transgender and gender-diverse adults
  • Partners and family members of transgender people
  • People living with HIV
  • LGBTQ+ adults dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma or grief
  • Sexual and relationship problems

Gender-affirming therapy

Gender-affirming therapy means I follow your lead on your identity and the path you want to take. Some clients are exploring gender for the first time. Others are well into transition and want support with family, work, relationships, or the stress of living in a world that doesn’t always make room for them.

I also work with partners and family members of transgender people, who often have their own questions, grief and adjustments to make. That work can happen alongside, and separate from, the trans person’s own therapy.

How I work

My approach is integrative and experiential. We talk, and we also pay attention to what is happening in your body and emotions in the moment. Shame, rejection and the stress of being treated as different often live in the body as much as in thought, so I may bring in Somatic Experiencing, EMDR or clinical hypnosis when they help.

I build on the strengths you already have, and offer support and practical feedback for the problems in front of you now as well as long-standing patterns.

Questions about LGBTQ+ therapy

What is gender-affirming therapy?

Gender-affirming therapy respects each person’s own sense of their gender and doesn’t try to change it. The therapist supports you in exploring identity, coping with stress and discrimination, and making the choices that are right for you. It’s for transgender, nonbinary and questioning people, and can include their partners and families.

Do I need an LGBTQ+ affirming therapist?

Many LGBTQ+ people find it easier to make progress with a therapist who already understands their communities and doesn’t need to be educated. That doesn’t mean every session is about identity. It means you can talk about your life, relationships and sexuality openly, without worrying about how it will be received.

Do you work with partners and families of transgender people?

Yes. Partners, parents and other family members of transgender people often have questions and feelings of their own, and benefit from a place to sort through them. I see adult family members individually, by video, if they’re located in New York State. This can sit alongside the trans person’s own therapy without replacing it.

Do you work with people living with HIV?

Yes. I have worked extensively with people living with HIV, and I’m a New York State Certified HIV counselor. Therapy can help with a new diagnosis, disclosure, stigma and relationships, and with the anxiety or depression that can come with them. I see adults located in New York State by video.
